전세계에서 아이폰을 사용할 수 있는 나라가 몇 개인지 문득 궁금해졌습니다. 손쉽게 애플 아이폰 페이지에서 찾을 수 있었습니다. 아래와 같이 47개국이군요.
그리고, 아이폰을 사용할 수 있게 곧 개통될 예정인 나라들도 표시되어 있네요. 29개국입니다. 이렇게 이미 개통되어 있고 개통될 나라들을 합치면 76개국이 되네요.
오늘 접한 아이폰 국내 연내 출시 무산이라는 기사는 “최소한의 현지화”를 지키지 않는 제조사의 거만함이라고 이유를 꼽았습니다. IT 전문매체의 인식이 이렇다는 사실이 조금 놀랍네요.
76개국에서 특별히 다른 현지화없이 제품 출시를 할 수 있었는데, 시장이 얼마나 될지도 모르는 대한민국 시장에 출시하기 위해서 제품관리를 다르게 하고 별도의 소프트웨어를 개발해야 하는 걸 “최소한의 현지화”라고 할 수 있을까요? (위피 폐지 제기라는 오해에 대해서는 드림위즈 이찬진 대표의 글을 참고해 보세요.)
조금 다른 측면이 있는데, 인터넷과 모바일 서비스를 제공하는 작은 한 회사의 대표서의 입장도 있습니다. 아이폰 뿐만 아니라 LG텔레콤에서 새로 출시한 “오즈” 인터넷폰을 위한 애플리케이션을 출시하면서 얼마나 시원함을 느꼈는지 모릅니다. 이런 단말기를 사용하는 고객들을 위한 서비스를 제공하기 위해 단말기 제조사나 이동통신사 어느 곳과도 협의할 필요없이 우리의 상상력을 마음껏 발휘해서 제품을 개발할 수 있었습니다. 아이폰 전용 애플리케이션의 경우, 미투데이가 제공하고 있는 API를 통해서 미투데이 직원이 아닌 외부 개발자가 개발해서 애플 AppStore에 등록할 수 있었고 (국내 서비스 대응 아이폰 애플리케이션 중 최초로 AppStore 등록), 아직 정식 버전이 출시되지 않았음에도 주당 1,000회 이상 다운로드가 발생하고 있습니다.
휴대폰에서 돌아가는 인터넷 서비스에 있어서 이는 얼마나 큰 변화입니까? 인터넷 서비스의 경우, 전혀 관련 사업자들과 사전협의가 필요없습니다. 애플리케이션의 경우, 개발도구와 등록심사 과정과 처리 시간도 우리의 현재와 비교되지 않습니다. 기계를 출시회사에서 생각지 못한 혁신적인 소프트웨어 기술과 일반인들의 이용패턴이 또 다른 혁신을 만들어 냅니다. 국내 모바일 업계는 이 모든 혁신의 가능성이 닫혀 있을 뿐입니다. (애플 아이폰 출시가 가장 유력했던 KTF는 대표이사가 납품업체와 짜고 비자금을 만드는 사태까지 보이니, 아이폰 출시를 계기로 달러 비자금 만드는 시도를 하느라 계속 지연된 건 아닌가 싶을 정도네요. 한숨만 나오죠.)
그나마 많지도 않은 국내 인터넷 모바일 스타트업이 뭔가 보여줄 수 있는 기회와 환경이 이렇게 안좋을 수가 있는지. 이런 사업을 하고 있는 사람의 입장이 아니더라도 전세계 76개국에서 환영하고 있다는데, 그냥 일반 소비자 입장에서 좀 써보기라도 합시다. 도대체 소비자의 이런 권리를 누가 왜 막고 있는겁니까.
“최소한의 국제화”를 준비하지 않고 있는 국내 현실을 안타까워 해야 하지 않겠습니까.
